SOC events in December
In the coming period, on the occasion of December 10, International Day of Human Rights, several events will be organized to raise the awareness of BH society at large that the principles guaranteed by the Universal Declaration on Human Rights cannot be implemented selectivelly.
On Saturday, December 7, we are organizing a workshop on human rights for LGBT persons, their connection, education and empowerment. Workshop will be led by Emina Bošnjak and Vladana Vasić (Only for participants who have confirmed at:[email protected])
On Tuesday, December 10, we are taking part in a Protest march HUMAN RIGHTS OUTSIDE! and we invite you join us! The idea of this march is to unite all marginalized groups and take to the streets together in order to solve our problems in a visible way, pointing to the daily violations of our human rights. It is of central importance for all marginalized groups to protest together on this day. It starts at 9.30 am and ends at 11 pm. The march starts in front of the Academy of Fine Arts at 9.30 am and ends at the Faculty of Philosophy at 11 pm.
On Thursday, December 12, 6 pm in Art Cinema Criterion, Obala Kulina Bana 2, we are hosting Award Ceremony for Journalists for professional and ethical reporting about LGBT people and themes in BiH in 2013. The award will be presented by Boban Stojanovic. The goal of this awards is to praise and awards journalists and media sources who ethnically and professional reported on LGBT themes in 2013, and to encourage them to continue reporting on LGBT themes in the coming years. After that, he will present his book As If Everything was OK. In it, he explains why it’s difficult to be openly gay in Serbia, the problems individuals face in society, and why some families are prepared to disown their children in order to fit in, rather than accept them.
On Friday, December 13, at 11 am, at the UNSA Center for Human Rights Library we are opening The LGBT Corner. The LGBT Corner at the University of Sarajevo’s Human Rights Library offers students and all citizens scholarly literature about human rights and culture of LGBT people, queer theory, LGBT studies, and related areas. At 9 pm, we will promote a book 18+ Book About Non-conformist Men. This book includes coming out stories and segments of interviews with gay, bisexual, and trans* men and couples as well as different types of visual art. Please RSVP by emailing [email protected].
ON Monday, December 16, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm we are organizing International Conference ADVANCING THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF LGBT PERSONS IN THE WESTERN BALKANS. The goal of this regional conference is to improve the visibility of LGBT people and point out problems, discrimination, and violence that LGBT people face in everyday life. Representatives from the Ombudspersons’ offices in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and BiH will be present, as well as civil society representatives from the aforementioned countries. At 5:30 pm, we are opening the Exhibition: the photography of Irfan Redzovica THE (IN)VISIBLE EVERYDAY LIFE – this exhibit hopes to show that the implementation of human rights must not be selective. It aims to shed light on various gender, sex, sexual and other identities. The photographs show segments of the life of people who defy our society’s binaries with their everyday lives.
