{"id":9545,"date":"2015-08-14T08:23:54","date_gmt":"2015-08-14T08:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soc.ba\/?p=9545"},"modified":"2015-08-14T08:23:54","modified_gmt":"2015-08-14T08:23:54","slug":"events-for-lgbt-community-a-place-for-encouragement-and-socializing-with-lgbt-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soc.ba\/en\/events-for-lgbt-community-a-place-for-encouragement-and-socializing-with-lgbt-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Events for LGBT community: A place for encouragement and socializing with LGBT community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"en-US\" align=\"JUSTIFY\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/soc.ba\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/rostilj_kisa.jpg\" alt=\"rostilj_kisa\" \/>In addition to our joint advocacy activities, Sarajevo Open Centre has continued with the regular bi-monthly gatherings organized for the LGBT community.<\/p> <p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">May, June and July were more relaxed months, with some less thematic gatherings and more fun activities for the community, since we have worked hard with our activist group on other equally important issues and projects. Together with the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>activist group<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> within SOC, we marked <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>IDAHOT 2015<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, that we have previously written about, we organized big regional &#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Conference on Transgender issues<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8221; having a special guest prof. Susan Stryker and were also in the Parliament on the first <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>special session devoted to rights of LGBT people<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/p> <p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>May<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, based on your wishes, we organized an evening gathering for the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>fans of \u201eGame of Thrones\u201d serial<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, talking about the series and queer moments in it. At the end of May we organized this year&#8217;s first <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>barbecue <\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">in the courtyard of the SOC, where despite the heavy rain there was about 40 people hanging out. Our DJ Sabina was responsible for the music, others for food and cakes and so we hung out late into the night.<\/span><\/p> <p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Our <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>June<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> gatherings, continued cheerfully with the sunny weather therefore we organized a <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>tournament in the Pictionary &#8211; board games<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">! Two weeks later, within the cycle of gatherings named &#8220;<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Empower yourself!<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8220;, we remember the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Stonewall riot<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and talked about the political importance of the pride parade after which we watched the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>British movie \u201ePride<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201c, that gave us many ideas for thinking, work and activism.<\/span><\/p> <p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/soc.ba\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/11781613_788015251318749_518782287738043665_n.jpg\" alt=\"11781613_788015251318749_518782287738043665_n\" \/>Beginning of the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>July<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, upon the requests that came from the community itself, we organized <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>living library<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> with our community members and talked about \u201e<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>LGBT and religion<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8220;. The topic itself and personal stories of being queer and religious prompted discussion that continued even after the gathering.<\/span><\/p> <p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">As a \u2018thank you\u2019 to our activist group, but also to all people who have contributed in any way to our work \u2013 with their talks and ideas, and as a way of closing the first half of the year, we organized another <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>barbecue<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, at the end of July, this time with SOC team. There were again a little more than 30 people, out of which ten were with us for the first time. <\/span><\/p> <p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">During <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>August<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, we&#8217;re having a break, planning new gatherings and new activities.<\/span><\/p> <p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Overall, during previously mentioned six gathering that we have organized during May, June and July there were <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>130 people in total<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> who came and visited us, and 30 of them were with us for the first time. We are also still communicating with <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>trans * people<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> who contact us for talk, advice or support.<\/span><\/p> <p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In addition to the organized gatherings with the community every two weeks, which we will continue in September, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>we encourage you<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> to contact us if you have any ideas or proposals.
